64 Yogini Sadhana

The 64 Yogini Puja comes from the Kaula tradition. Kaula means the embodied cosmos. The aim in the Kaula tradition of Shaivism is to embody the totality of Shiva and Shakti in each individual body like a hologram of the original, or like a fractal of the totality, and to use the microcosmic condition of the human body to reflect, express and transform the totality. And the 64Yoginis are the initiators, the bringers of the arts and the sciences of how to attain the 64 types of Mahamudra Samadhis that we can have before certain types of awakening/enlightenment.

And this particular Kaula tradition of the 64 Yoginis comes from the Lalla Madhura Kaula, which focuses on all initiations coming with a basic ground of love, because it is said that love is the first movement of Shiva and Shakti towards form. And so this movement of love takes us into form and cultivates a particular type of mind that we use for eventually liberating and transmuting the world of samsara and its forms.

The 64 Yogini Puja honors and awakens and establishes in us the 64 qualities of Mahamudra, which begin with love. It has been hundreds or thousands of years since the practices of these 64 Yoginis were strongly upheld and practiced, and by embarking in this Puja, we begin to bring back their energies and awaken the ground of consciousness towards these 64 Samadhis, towards the evolution that the Yoginis say can come to humanity when the 64 Samadhis are played out in our bodies and played out in society. The teachings establish in the body a current of energy that constantly turns the consciousness to Mahamudra, and that colors (or maybe we would say un-colors) the mind with a quality of innocence, so that all of the movements in the world of forms hold the original spanda – the adya spanda.

And the aim of the practice is to make all of the layers of the human body mind actually activate their inherent qualities of awakening - particularly in the 64 Samadhis of Mahamudra. When the Siddhi or the blessings, and the power of the 64 Yoginisare given to us, it is said to awaken much like a genetic code these inherent capacities of Mahamudra because in the Kaula tradition many of the practices start once we are able to express the different Samadhis of Mahamudra. For us it could be a return to an inherent and primordial energy in us – the energy of love, which is the first movement of the formless to the form.
